I should have started this blog months ago, when I was first laid off. I am currently writing from the Columbus central library. I am an avid supporter of the Columbus Metropolitan Library System which only recently lost its prestige as America's best.
Besides sequestering myself so I can get some calculus practice done, I am also forced to use the library computers as my laptop is in the shop. In these tough times, I know a new mac will not be in my financial future, so I am requesting a complete overhaul in the last month of my warranty. With any luck, my machine will return to me as good as new at the end of the month.
The computers at the libary are broken-in to say the least. The keys and mouse, once finished with a fine microtexture are polished smooth from nearly constant use. Everything has a slick over it from the grease of hundreds of hands and fingers. The white letters over the keys have browned or completely worn away, causing difficulty for those who have not memorized the QWERTY layout. God knows how many fingers have graced these machines since they were last cleaned. Wait times for available computers are often half an hour.
Despite increased utilization, the State of Ohio is planning to slash library funding by an additional 50%. This after a 20% cut at the beginning of the year. Many other states are having to make even worse cuts. Tough times, indeed.
Even though we've been victims of crime lately, I am so glad to live in a neighborhood so close to the city. Walking to the library, or even the heart of downtown is easier than driving and parking, and doesn't seem far enough to pay $1.50 bus fare.
I am fortunate to be moving to a much nicer neighborhood soon; one that is still in the city and actually far more conveniently located. Living with a roommate, the rent will be cheaper too.
The computer is about to kick me off. I think I've spent enough time here today. I'm going to wash my hands, then head back to cook myself some lunch.
